About a year ago, Daniel and I had the bright idea that we were going to sleep in the floor. We had an old futon mat in our ‘record room’ that hardly got used so we started using it as our primary bed. In the beginning, we would drag it out of its new home (a big hope chest) and make it up every night, but that got old fast. Eventually, we just started dragging it out and throwing blankets and pillows on top of it. Now, you’re probably wondering the reason why we decided to sleep on the floor? We started initially because my bed hurt Daniel’s back, but it was also fun pretending we were asian for a little while. We also didn’t have a kitchen table at the time either, so most of our meals were also had on the floor.
We continued this for about six months. We stopped because we rearranged the whole house and swapped bedrooms entirely and had done too much work to not at least sleep in our (new) bedroom. We haven’t really missed sleeping in the floor, but I definitely would do it again. The first few nights were the hardest to get comfortable for me, but after that it was smooth sailing. It was even nice to wake up with a cat sleeping right next to you. Our cats still sleep right beside our bed, and they’ve gotten stepped on a few times when I wake up groggy in the middle of the night. I’ve learned to feel around first with my foot before I actually put my weight down.
One of my favorite things about sleeping in the floor, was how easy it was to pick everything up in the mornings. I don’t know about you, but I sleep like a wild animal. Daniel actually calls me a tornado; maybe this is why I hate making the bed? Either way, it was super easy to pick up the mat really quick and fold a couple of blankets (we didn’t need more than a couple since my husband is like a personal heater).
If you’re bored with your bed, or looking for a change, may I suggest sleeping in the floor? It also made me more grateful for having a bed considering a lot of the world doesn’t have that luxury… yes, having a bed is a luxury. Overall, it was a cool experience and we would totally do it again.
